Greece suspends debt enforcement for 2026 wildfire victims

The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance, in coordination with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, has announced a 12-month suspension of all compulsory enforcement actions for individuals and businesses affected by the July and August 2026 wildfires.

According to the joint ministerial decision published in the Government Gazette, the moratorium covers auctions of movable and immovable property, seizures, evictions, and personal detentions. It also suspends deadlines for legal remedies regarding pending enforcement proceedings. The only exception to this measure is claims for alimony or child support.

To qualify, victims must be officially certified by the relevant Regional Authorities and must be enrolled in state aid programs or housing assistance and family compensation schemes. The 12-month period begins from the date each specific area was officially designated as an affected region.

The measure applies to several regions, including parts of West Attica, Achaea, Aetolia-Acarnania, Kefallinia, Ithaca, Lasithi, Rethymno, Argolida, Boeotia, Euboea, Phocis, Kalymnos, Paros, Andros, Thessaloniki, Chalkidiki, and Lesvos.
