Greece suspends foreclosures for 2026 wildfire victims
The Greek government has announced a 12-month suspension of compulsory enforcement actions for individuals and businesses affected by the wildfires of July and August 2026. This measure, issued via a joint decision by the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Konstantinos Katsafados, aims to provide economic relief to those impacted.
The suspension covers auctions, seizures, evictions, personal detentions, and deadlines for legal remedies related to pending enforcement proceedings. This applies to both movable and immovable property, with the sole exception of alimony requirements.
To qualify, victims must be officially certified by the relevant regional authorities as having suffered damage and must be included in state aid programs or housing assistance and family compensation schemes. The measure is not universal for all residents in fire-affected areas but is specifically targeted at those meeting these official criteria.
