Greece targets European leadership in autonomous naval platforms by 2030
Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias has announced a strategic priority to make the Hellenic Navy a European leader in the development of autonomous platforms by 2030. This initiative, referred to as 'Agenda 2030', focuses on the acceleration of unmanned and autonomous systems to modernize the armed forces.
A key component of this plan is the mass production of the 'Pyropolitis', a Greek-designed unmanned vessel, alongside the development of larger autonomous craft. The transition involves integrating artificial intelligence under human supervision to enhance naval capabilities, particularly in environments such as the Aegean Sea.
The announcement coincided with the inauguration of the Inter-branch Training Centre for Unmanned and Autonomous Maritime Systems at the Skaramangas Naval Base. This follows recent developments including the establishment of the 309th Unmanned Means Manufacturing Factory and the opening of the Inter-branch Training Centre for Unmanned Aerial Weapons in Tripoli.
