Greece to implement digital system for vehicle license plates

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is implementing a new digital system for the ordering and manufacturing of vehicle license plates to resolve chronic delays and stock shortages. The reform, promoted by Deputy Minister Giorgos Kotsiras, replaces the existing centralized and slow procurement tender model with an open, fully digitized market.

Under the new framework, vehicle owners or authorized agents will submit requests electronically for new registrations or replacements due to damage, theft, or loss. The process will be integrated with the e-paravolo and DIAS systems for automated verification and electronic payment. Once completed, a digital production order will be sent directly to a certified manufacturer.

A central pillar of the reform is the creation of a Manufacturers' Register. This will allow any company that meets specific technical, security, and equipment standards to participate, removing the previous dependence on a limited number of suppliers. This move aims to increase market flexibility and ensure steady supply even during periods of high demand.
