Greece announces €53.77 million subsidy for livestock feed

Greece's Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Thanasis Kavvadas, has announced an emergency subsidy of approximately €53.77 million to cover animal feed costs for livestock farmers nationwide. The funds are expected to be distributed within October following the signing of a Joint Ministerial Decision.

Speaking at the 3rd AGRE AMFI Agricultural Exhibition in Amphilochia, Kavvadas also detailed a €263.5 million program for agricultural improvement plans. This initiative, open for applications from October 6, 2026, to January 20, 2027, aims to modernize stables, improve water conservation, and enhance energy autonomy and biosecurity.

The announcements follow a period of livestock mortality in the Aitoloakarnania region, where 1,045 sheep and goats died due to bloat. While some farmers have already received compensation, the Minister noted that no new cases of bloat have been reported since September 8. He emphasized that future livestock restocking must focus on modern, licensed units that adhere to strict biosecurity measures.
