Greece announces Agenda 2030 defense and fortification plan

Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias has announced a comprehensive strategic overhaul of the country’s military capabilities under the ‘Agenda 2030’ framework. A central component of this plan involves the implementation of 522 fortification projects, specifically targeting critical border regions such as Evros and the Aegean islands to enhance deterrence and operational readiness.

The initiative also focuses on a significant shift from defense spending to defense investment. Dendias aims to transform Greece from a mere purchaser of military systems into a co-producer, utilizing defense spending as a driver for national economic growth and GDP increase.

Technological advancement is a key pillar of this transition, particularly in domestic drone production. Current capabilities allow for the production of approximately 5,000 drones annually through existing facilities. However, with the upcoming completion of the 309 Plant in December, the military expects to reach a production capacity of up to 15,000 drones per year, enhancing both reconnaissance and offensive capabilities.
