Greece to implement automated fines for expired vehicle inspections

The Greek government is developing an automated electronic data cross-checking system to identify vehicle owners who have failed to complete mandatory technical inspections (KTEO) within required timeframes. This initiative, planned by the General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance, aims to link databases from the Ministry of Finance, insurance companies, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Violators face a fine of 400 euros. For vehicles that previously passed or had only secondary deficiencies, a one-week grace period will be allowed after the inspection deadline. However, different rules apply to vehicles with serious or dangerous deficiencies recorded during previous inspections. In cases of dangerous deficiencies, vehicle circulation is prohibited until repairs are completed.

Industry experts suggest the necessary conditions for this digital governance move have matured, with implementation potentially occurring by the end of the year.
