Greece to install 1,000 AI traffic cameras in Attica, Thessaloniki, Crete

The Greek government announced a major road‑safety investment to install 1,000 new artificial‑intelligence‑enabled traffic cameras across Attica, Thessaloniki and Crete. The project, budgeted at €44 million with the possibility of expanding to €88 million, will create a Unified National Digital Recording and Enforcement System for the Hellenic Police.

The AI cameras will automatically detect violations such as excessive speed, red‑light running, mobile‑phone use and failure to wear seat belts. They join existing surveillance assets, including 25 bus‑lane cameras in Athens, six smart traffic‑police cameras in the capital and 388 regional cameras slated to start operation on 5 August. The rollout aims to improve enforcement and driver behaviour in three of Greece’s most populated regions.
