Greece to invest 62.1 million euros in coastal fishery monitoring system
The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food is launching a digital upgrade for the small-scale coastal fishing sector. The project, titled ‘Small-Scale Coastal Fisheries Monitoring System’, is part of the ‘Fisheries, Aquaculture and Sea (PALYTH) 2021-2027’ program.
With a total public expenditure of 62,124,000 euros, the initiative is co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. The project beneficiary is the MAE Information Society. The goal is to expand the existing Integrated System for Monitoring and Recording Fishing Activities (OSPA) to improve transparency, traceability, and sustainable resource management.
The plan includes the procurement and installation of tracking devices on 10,743 fishing vessels, along with an equal number of tablets for data entry. The system will enable automated recording of geographic location, course, and activity duration, utilizing GIS tools and digital analysis. Implementation is expected to run from January 2, 2027, through December 31, 2029.
