Greece to launch electronic checks for expired vehicle technical inspections
The General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance, in collaboration with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, is launching a large-scale electronic cross-check targeting vehicle owners in Greece. Following previous enforcement actions regarding uninsured vehicles and unpaid circulation fees—which resulted in approximately 300,000 fines since early 2026—the new digital audit will focus on expired periodic technical inspections (KTEO).
The system will utilize data from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to identify vehicles without a valid technical inspection certificate. For vehicles that previously passed with “Success” or “Minor Deficiencies,” a one-week grace period after the due date is provided before a violation is recorded. Stricter rules apply to vehicles with “Serious” or “Dangerous Deficiencies,” which are prohibited from circulating until repairs are verified.
Violators face fines of up to 400 euros. Recent data shows that approximately 90% of appeals against previous fines for insurance and circulation fees were rejected, as many claims were found to be baseless or based on incorrect information regarding the timing of the violation. The new inspection process will be conducted entirely electronically without the need for physical roadside checkpoints.
