Greece to modernize Athens Metro Line 1 with 14 refurbished trains

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inspected the first of 14 fully reconstructed train sets for Athens Metro Line 1. The refurbished rolling stock, which entered service last week, features upgraded accessibility for wheelchairs, new engines, enhanced air conditioning, and CCTV security systems.

The interior renovations include LED lighting, new seating, flooring, windows, and modern passenger information screens. The modernization program aims to improve service frequency and overall reliability on this key transit axis, addressing the issues caused by aging equipment.

The project is scheduled for completion by 2027. The reconstruction work is being carried out in Volos in collaboration with the Spanish company CAF.
