Greece to reclassify telephone fraud as felony regardless of amount
Greece is implementing stricter legal measures to combat telephone and electronic fraud. Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis announced that a new legislative provision will reclassify these frauds as felonies, regardless of the financial amount involved. This removes the previous 120,000 euro threshold required to categorize such acts as felonies.
The new regulation is intended to protect victims of all ages, specifically targeting crimes that use fear, anxiety, or terror to coerce individuals into transferring money. While often targeting the elderly, the Minister clarified that the law will cover all victims.
To support these efforts, the Hellenic Police will establish a specialized unit dedicated exclusively to investigating telephone and related scams. This unit will utilize modern electronic tools to track criminal networks. The relevant bill was submitted to Parliament and is expected to be voted on around October 15.
