Greece unveils 6.5 billion‑euro housing strategy for 2026‑2035
The Greek Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family presented the National Housing Strategy for 2026‑2035, a ten‑year plan funded with €6.5 billion. The programme outlines 50 measures—14 new and 36 already underway—to increase housing supply, support households facing high costs and monitor results continuously. Key actions include the creation of a Unified Housing Agency to centralise social‑housing programmes, allocation of public land on islands for new homes, expedited building‑permit procedures, and financial incentives such as low‑interest loans, guarantees and subsidies for developers that commit part of new units to affordable rent.
The plan also proposes local Social‑Rental Offices, digital platforms matching student and public‑employee housing needs, and the establishment of a National Property‑Price Index to guide policy. Performance will be tracked through indicators like the reduction of housing cost burden and the reopening of vacant homes. Existing measures—housing allowances, rent‑return schemes, student‑housing construction, and stricter rules on short‑term rentals and Golden‑Visa properties—are integrated into the new framework.
