Greece updates regulations for open-air markets
New regulations in Greece are set to modernize the operation of open-air markets, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and expand opportunities for both producers and consumers. According to a circular from the General Secretariat of Commerce of the Ministry of Development, the new framework simplifies licensing processes and introduces more flexible operating hours.
One significant change allows producers and professional sellers to participate in both a morning and an afternoon market on the same day, potentially increasing their income and providing more convenience for working consumers. Additionally, the time required to issue a producer-seller license has been reduced to five working days, and the requirement for periodic renewal of electronic licenses has been abolished.
Municipalities also gain the ability to organize markets exclusively for producers to encourage the direct sale of agricultural products. To address seasonal needs, up to 10% of market stalls can be allocated to producers for up to six months through a simplified application and, if necessary, an electronic lottery system.
