Greek market regulation and promotion updates
Overview
Greece has introduced new regulations aimed at modernizing open-air markets by reducing bureaucracy and simplifying licensing. The Ministry of Development’s new framework, detailed in a circular from the General Secretariat of Commerce, shortens the time required to issue producer-seller licenses to five working days and removes the need for periodic electronic license renewals. The reforms also allow sellers to participate in both morning and afternoon markets on the same day and permit municipalities to organize markets exclusively for direct agricultural sales.
To address seasonal demand, up to 10% of market stalls can be allocated to producers for up to six months through a simplified application process or an electronic lottery system if necessary.
In the Attica Region, the Attica Street Markets Operation Body and the Panhellenic Federation of Agricultural Product Producer Associations have announced a strategic plan to upgrade operations. This includes a €1 million advertising campaign scheduled for presentation on November 12, intended to enhance market image and increase visitor numbers.
Authorities are also addressing operational hurdles, such as illegal vehicle parking that obstructs market setups. Proposed solutions include installing warning signs, collaborating with Traffic Police, and potentially using crane services to remove obstructing vehicles, with costs to be covered by fines. Additional improvements under discussion include road signage and regulated morning arrival schedules.
