Greece weather forecast predicts warmer, wetter 2026-2027 winter

Forecasts for the 2026-2027 winter in Greece and Southern Europe suggest a trend toward warmer temperatures and increased precipitation compared to average levels. This pattern is attributed to a strong El Niño event, which is expected to peak between November and January.

According to analysis from the El Niño Guide, utilizing models from NOAA CPC, ECMWF, and WMO, the phenomenon may shift Atlantic weather systems further south. This shift could favor higher rainfall amounts for Greece, Italy, Spain, and the Balkan region.

However, experts note that the relationship between El Niño and European weather is complex. A potential variable is the behavior of the polar vortex in the stratosphere. A strong El Niño could weaken the polar vortex, increasing the likelihood of Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events in early 2027, which might temporarily trigger much colder conditions in parts of Europe.
