A massive wildfire that struck the Attica and Boeotia regions of Greece from July 31 to August 4, 2026, destroyed 111,732 stremmata (approximately 27,600 acres) of land. According to a preliminary analysis by the FLAME Pyrometeorological Team of the National Observatory of Athens' METEO unit, the fire released at least 380 terajoules of energy, a quantity comparable to the energy of six Hiroshima-type atomic bombs.

The fire, which originated north of Agios Vasileios in Boeotia, spread rapidly due to gale-force winds exceeding 80 km/h. Data indicates that 55% of the total burned area was consumed during two intense nighttime surges. During these periods, the fire expanded at rates as high as 2,800 stremmata per hour.

In response to the blaze, the Fire Service conducted complex rescue operations, particularly in Agios Vasileios, where land access was cut off. A total of 254 citizens were evacuated by sea, including elderly individuals and families with small children. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with authorities looking into technical failures in a nearby wind farm's electrical network.
