Greece wildfire in Liti kills 60‑year‑old man, injures wife, child initially missing

A large wildfire broke out on June 30, 2026 in the Oraiokastro area of the village of Liti, near Derbeni in the Thessaloniki region of Greece. The fire spread rapidly across forested hills, prompting the evacuation of the settlement and the deployment of dozens of firefighters, five air‑drop aircraft and two helicopters, aided by water supplies from the Central Macedonia region.

Authorities found the body of a 60‑year‑old male teacher who lived in an isolated house on the hillside. His wife suffered severe burns and was taken to Ippokratis Hospital. Their 12‑year‑old child was initially reported missing; later updates indicated the child had been located.

The incident left one dead, one seriously injured and raised concerns for the missing child, while emergency services continued to battle residual hotspots into the evening.
