Greece wildfire investigation reveals delayed emergency response

An investigation into the massive wildfire that broke out on July 31, 2026, in Boeotia and spread to Western Attica, including Porto Germeno and Psatha, suggests significant delays in emergency response. The fire, which burned approximately 140,000 acres, reportedly originated from the electrical network of a wind farm.

Telemetric data indicates a lack of immediate ground response during the critical first hour. Only two fire engines from Thebes were mobilized initially, a period during which the blaze might have been contained. Furthermore, aerial operations were reportedly insufficient relative to the severity of the front. Investigators suggest that resources may have been withheld from the Boeotia region to reserve them for Attica.

Regarding weather conditions, data from the Kaparelli meteorological station indicates that wind speeds were approximately 25.7 kilometers per hour (4 Beaufort) at the time of the outbreak, which is lower than initial media reports had suggested.
