Greece wildfires: 90% caused by human negligence

Kostas Tsigas, President of the Fire Service Officers Association, reported that human activity is responsible for 9 out of 10 wildfires in Greece this year. Approximately 90% of these incidents are attributed to negligence, while roughly 11% are classified as intentional arson.

Since the beginning of the year, approximately 4,700 agricultural and forest fires have been recorded, with nearly 3,000 occurring since the start of the fire season. In August alone, fire reports approached 900. The current season has seen significant destruction in regions including Crete and Western Attica.

To combat these incidents, authorities have strengthened the Arson Crimes Directorate with increased personnel, expertise, and digital tools. Additionally, 37 new investigative teams have been established to operate on a 24-hour basis to improve the investigation of causes and the assignment of responsibility.
