Greek Wildfires Near Athens Burn 13,000 Hectares, Firefighters Deploy Hundreds
Firefighters have been battling a massive wildfire on the outskirts of Athens for a fifth consecutive day. The blaze, which began on Friday, has scorched roughly 13,000 hectares of pine forest, maquis and agricultural land across the Attica‑Boeotia region.
Around 575 firefighters, more than 30 aircraft (including 12 water‑bombing planes and 20 helicopters), and numerous ground crews have been deployed. While the situation has improved, scattered hotspots remain, and authorities warn that the fire‑risk level stays at four out of five.
The fire’s main front is near the coastal village of Psatha, about 60 km northwest of Athens, and has devastated the nearby resort of Porto Germeno, where dozens of homes are destroyed or damaged and police have set up checkpoints to control access. High temperatures and strong winds threaten further flare‑ups.
Officials reported additional smaller fires in Kotyli (Kilki), Platia (Thessprotia), Agios Lavrenti (Magnesia), Soro (Rhodes), Nea Sampsounta (Preveza), Pythagoreio (Samos) and Souda (Chania), all of which have been contained. Several citizens were fined for dangerous activities near forested areas, receiving penalties of €3,000 and €1,690 respectively.
