Greece's Egnatia highway toll exemption under parliamentary challenge

Members of the Greek Communist Party (KKE), MPs Giannis Delis and Leonidas Stoltidis, submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport demanding that the free‑toll passage granted to permanent residents of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace on the Egnatia highway not be abolished. They argue that the exemption is essential for daily commuters – workers, professionals, farmers and patients – and that its removal would increase the financial burden on families.

The MPs link the proposed termination of the exemption to the recent concession of the highway to the private operator GEK‑Terna, noting that the operator has raised toll rates and eliminated discount packages. They call for the cancellation of the concession contracts and for tolls to be removed on all major road axes, stressing that the highway serves as a vital transport link for the region’s residents.
