Greece's housing renovation schemes near exhaustion as August deadline looms

Two European‑funded housing schemes – the "Renovation of Housing" programme and the "My Home II" (Σπίτι μου II) loan programme – are set to close at the end of August 2026. By a month before the deadline, more than 15,000 housing loans have been approved under My Home II, with a total value exceeding €1.8 trillion, and the programme’s budget has been absorbed by 95%, indicating near exhaustion.

The Renovation of Housing programme has attracted over 150,000 property applications, and more than 77,000 properties have been deemed eligible. The scheme focuses on vacant or "closed" homes, offering subsidies of up to €36,000 per property and targeting over 75,000 homes for renovation.

For these closed properties the programme imposes stricter conditions: a five‑year commitment to long‑term rental, a three‑year locked rent, and a ban on short‑term rentals, aiming to increase the supply of long‑term rental housing amid strong housing pressure in Greece.
