Porto Germeno devastated by fast‑spreading Kithaironas wildfire
A wildfire ignited in southern Boeotia in early August 2026 and, driven by strong winds, raced up the slopes of Mount Kithaironas. Within minutes the fire surged toward the coastal village of Porto Germeno in western Attica, reaching the settlement at dawn on 1 August. The blaze created towering pyrocumulus clouds and burned more than 200 000 hectares across Greece, including Crete and Paros.
The fire was eventually halted when it encountered already‑burned terrain, the sea and other areas with little fuel. Over 10 000 residents were displaced, many returning to find their homes reduced to ash. Residents described the loss in stark terms, saying “we will not live to see this forest again.” Timelapse footage captured by the Association E.R.A. D.I.K., which had installed a camera and weather station on Kithaironas, shows the rapid spread of flames and the formation of pyrocumulus clouds. Greek authorities are monitoring the situation, with police kept informed and the cabinet discussing emergency aid for those who lost homes and livelihoods.
