Greece's National Lyric Stage Announces 'Alternative Era' 2026‑27 Program

The Alternative Stage of Greece’s National Lyric Stage (Eθνική Λυρική Σκηνή) marked its ten‑year presence at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center by unveiling the artistic period 2026‑27, titled “Alternative Era.” The season is organized into a series of thematic festivals that centre on sound, linking musical theatre, contemporary dance, visual arts, electronic music, Byzantine and early music, and educational activities. Artistic Director George Koumentakis highlighted that the new programming structure will feature six new musical‑theatre productions, an eighteen‑concert series of contemporary Greek music, four concerts dedicated to Byzantine repertoire and nine concerts exploring pre‑modern music. Composer Giannis Aggelaki has been appointed Head of Programming for the Alternative Stage, overseeing the interdisciplinary collaborations.

The announced programme aims to broaden the stage’s identity as a space for research, creation and audience dialogue, with projects ranging from live installations to workshops and participatory works. The initiative underscores a decade of artistic development and signals a renewed focus on innovative sound‑based experiences for the 2026‑27 season.
