Greece's National Price Reduction Deal Targets 850 Grocery Items

Forty‑seven Greek businesses have submitted their first comprehensive proposals for the National Price Reduction Agreement, covering more than 620 product codes. The list has been expanded to roughly 850 items after adding 130 school‑supply codes and about 100 private‑label products from supermarket chains.

The negotiations, conducted behind closed doors by the Independent Authority for Market Oversight and Consumer Protection, aim for price cuts of 5‑15% on fresh meat and 5‑20% on other categories. Early proposals cluster around 5‑10% reductions, and officials warn that “the next round will be a poker game for thin players.” The outcome will depend on whether supermarkets choose to back out of specific codes to boost discounts, with private‑label items giving chains greater leeway to set competitive prices for consumers.
