Greek summer sales and staple food price-cut programme
Overview
The 2026 Greek summer sales period, running from 13 July to 31 August, continues to face challenges as retailers report lower turnover compared to the previous year. While tourism remains high, visitors are prioritizing spending on accommodation, food, and transport over retail. Small and medium-sized enterprises also face pressure from international Asian e-commerce platforms.
Recent reports indicate that retail movement has been “sluggish and lacked momentum” due to limited consumer purchasing power. A notable shift in market dynamics has emerged: while large enterprises are seeing increased sales, small businesses are facing a decline of approximately 20%. This turnover transfer is particularly evident in the clothing sector, where larger companies leverage the flexibility to import goods at lower prices and offer more aggressive discounts. Furthermore, consumers are increasingly bypassing traditional sale periods in favor of major events like Black Friday.
To ensure transparency, businesses must disclose previous prices, defined as the lowest offered within the 30 days prior to the sale. If more than 60% of a store’s inventory is discounted, the percentage must be displayed in the storefront. Experts advise consumers to distinguish between ‘discounts’ on current season items and ‘offers’ on older stock, cautioning shoppers to verify final prices to avoid artificial hikes implemented just before sales begin. Consumers are also protected by law regarding defective products, which may entitle them to repair, replacement, or a refund.
Regarding the National Price Reduction Initiative, the scope has expanded to approximately 850 items. Negotiations conducted by the Independent Authority for Market and Consumer Protection (AAEA&PK) aim for price cuts on fresh meat and other categories. This initiative is intended to remain in force until 31 December 2026.
