Greek Ministry rules out rent price ceiling amid housing strategy debate
The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family clarified that the National Housing Strategy does not contain any proposal to impose a rent‑price ceiling, and the government has no intention to introduce administrative controls or upper limits on rental prices. Officials stressed that the strategy, currently under public consultation, aims to address housing challenges by expanding supply, promoting social and affordable housing, facilitating home ownership for young people and supporting renters through targeted measures.
The ministry also warned that rent‑cap schemes in other countries have often produced adverse effects, such as reduced rental housing stock, delayed investments and lower quality accommodation. It argued that imposing such limits could deepen the informal economy rather than improve housing affordability.
