Greek 2026 University Admission Cutoffs Set to Rise, Exotic Fields Surge

The Ministry of Education in Greece has indicated that the admission cutoffs for the 2026 university intake will be published in early August, following the processing of candidates' preferences and the completion of the computer‑based application forms.

Estimates show that the minimum entry basis (EBE) will be around 8.91 for humanities, 10.48 for sciences, 9.84 for health studies and 8.25 for economics and informatics. Of the 89,032 applicants competing for 68,788 university places, overall cutoffs are expected to remain fairly stable, with modest declines in some humanities and economics programmes and steadier or slightly higher scores in the natural sciences and health fields.

A pronounced shift is observed toward highly specialised “exotic” programmes such as aerospace science, marine science and oceanography, where projected scores can reach up to 1,250 points. This trend is driven by strong labour‑market demand for niche technical skills, innovative curricula linked to international research institutes and a saturation of graduates in traditional fields like law, medicine and engineering. Regional universities are attracting top candidates for these programmes, reshaping the geographical distribution of high‑scoring admissions.
