Greek agricultural authorities issue guidance for pistachio and cotton farmers

Agricultural authorities in Greece have issued technical warnings and guidance for pistachio and cotton producers in Central Greece and the Larissa region to manage pests and optimize harvest quality.

The Regional Center for Plant Protection, Quality and Phytosanitary Control of Volos has alerted pistachio growers to symptoms of botryosphaeria and septoria. These diseases cause drying of leaves, fruits, and branches. To prevent infection in future seasons, authorities recommend collecting and destroying infected plant parts before leaf fall, removing fallen leaves, and using copper-based preparations. Proper tree aeration during winter pruning is also advised.

In Larissa, the Directorate of Agricultural Economy is providing instructions for cotton cultivation. While summer weather supported normal development, there have been notable levels of pink bollworm activity. To maintain fiber quality and commercial value, producers are advised on defoliation practices. For crops with heavy vegetation, the use of hormonal accelerators is suggested when 25-40% of bolls have opened to assist in ripening and early harvesting.
