Greek agricultural commodity prices tumble in June 2026

The June 2026 Piraeus agricultural price index fell by 12.2%, with the majority of commodities posting negative returns. Beef and orange‑juice prices were the only notable exceptions that rose.

Analysts attribute the decline to a stronger US dollar, improved supply conditions in key grain‑producing nations and a more restrained demand outlook. The USDA report highlighted a widened supply‑demand gap: wheat supplies eased price pressure, while heatwaves across Europe raised production concerns. Corn demand stayed selective, driven by ethanol exports, and soy prices balanced on renewed Chinese demand. Cotton benefitted from global consumption outpacing production, whereas sugar fell as Brazil’s output surged. Experts warn that an intensified El Niño episode could curtail supplies in India and Thailand during the 2026‑27 winter, potentially supporting future prices. Overall, the market is shaped by ample supply, weather‑related risks and currency dynamics.
