Greek agricultural subsidies top €1.1 trillion as fraud probe expands

Payments for Greece’s farm support programmes have reached €1.126 trillion, surpassing the €1.060 trillion target. The Treasury’s audit unit has opened investigations into 2,900 suspected fraud cases, issuing 70 prosecutor orders for preliminary examinations. Authorities estimate the illicit gain at €69 million, have dismantled five criminal groups and launched 1,151 prosecutions.

The crackdown is being coordinated by the police’s Organized Crime Division and the judicial system, emphasizing legality, justice and protection of legitimate beneficiaries.
