Greek banks report strong credit expansion and profits in 2026
Greek banks are experiencing significant credit expansion and profitability in the first half of 2026. The systemic banking sector injected approximately 8.8 billion euros into the market during this period, with total credit expansion for the year projected to exceed 15 billion euros.
Key performance metrics for the major systemic banks include: Eurobank recorded 2.7 billion euros in expansion, Alpha Bank 2.2 billion euros, National Bank of Greece 2.1 billion euros, and Piraeus Bank 1.8 billion euros. When including other institutions like Optima Bank and Bank of Cyprus, total expansion for the half-year exceeded 13 billion euros.
Profitability remains strong, with the four systemic banks reporting combined net profits of approximately 2.5 to 2.9 billion euros. Analysts from Moody’s note a shift in the profitability model, as banks become less dependent on interest rates and more reliant on credit expansion, fee income, and stabilized asset quality. Business loans, particularly for investment projects related to the Recovery Fund and energy sectors, serve as the primary growth driver.
To support digital transformation and modernization, banks are also restructuring their workforce, offering competitive salaries and benefits to attract younger talent aged 20-40.
