Greek basketball investigation: Panagiotis Giannakis to testify

Panagiotis Giannakis, a former international basketball player and coach, is scheduled to testify before an investigator on Thursday, October 29, regarding the alleged manipulation of basketball matches in Greece.

The judicial investigation, often referred to as ‘Basket Gate’, involves allegations of match-fixing ranging from Greek Basketball League (GBL) games to school-level competitions. Several individuals have already been remanded in custody, including Vangelis Liolios, Petros Papapetrou, and Giorgos Mavraganis.

Other officials, including referee Vasos Tsarouha, refereeing expert consultant Ilias Koromilas, and former referee Tasos Piloidis, have also been called for questioning. Koromilas faces allegations involving nine acts of bribery, though he denies receiving payments to favor specific teams, such as Promitheas, founded by Liolios.
