Greek basketball scandal: Key witness implicates federation president

Vangelis Tsapas, a prominent figure in Greek basketball associated with Faros Keratsiniou and Ionikos Nikeas, has emerged as a key witness in a major investigation into match-fixing and corruption within the sport.

In recent statements, Tsapas admitted to being part of the problem but stated he approached authorities seeking redemption. He specifically implicated Giorgos Liolios, the president of the Greek Basketball Federation, alleging that Liolios sought to manipulate games and consolidate power through various means.

Tsapas addressed receiving 100,000 euros from Liolios, explaining that the money was compensation for providing a specific position. He also commented on the systemic nature of the corruption, describing the use of officials as tools for the federation president's influence and noting a culture of retaliation against those who did not comply with demands.
