Greece intensifies beach inspections using drones and MyCoast app

Greek Land Services, under the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, have conducted over 1,500 inspections across more than 300 beaches and 450 businesses to enforce new shoreline protection laws. To identify violations such as illegal occupation of the shoreline, exceeding permitted space, and obstructing public access, authorities are utilizing drones, advanced technological tools, and remote monitoring in collaboration with the University of the Aegean.

Citizens contribute to these efforts through the MyCoast application and telephone reports. While the number of complaints is reported as lower this year—indicating increased compliance with Law 5092/2024—targeted actions continue in areas with high complaint volumes, including Chalkidiki, East Attica, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and Kavala.

Significant penalties have been issued, including a 73,000 euro fine in Rhodes for obstructing shoreline access and a 72,490.60 euro fine in Zakynthos. To date, over 8,000 concession contracts have been signed for the summer period, comprising 4,870 direct concessions and approximately 3,130 via electronic auctions.
