Two Greek Canadair CL‑415 firefighting aircraft were sent to Spain under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (RescEU) to fight the large forest fires affecting areas near Madrid and Valencia. The planes took off from Torrejón air base on the morning of 26 July and began operations over the Burgohondo area, about 115 km west of Madrid. At the request of the European Union Emergency Response Coordination Centre, Greece extended the mission for an additional 24 hours, keeping the aircraft in Spain until at least 2 August because forecasts warned of strong northerly winds and high temperatures.

Since the start of the year, Spanish fires have destroyed roughly 153,000 hectares, prompting the evacuation of around 75,000 people. The Greek deployment is part of a broader multinational effort to contain the blaze.
