Greek chestnut harvest shows stable production and improved quality

The chestnut harvest in Greece is currently underway, with production levels expected to remain stable or show slight increases in key regions. In Melivoia, production is projected to exceed 1,500 tonnes, contributing to an estimated 3,000 tonnes for the entire Municipality of Agia.

In the Paiko region, estimates suggest a yield between 1,000 and 1,200 tonnes. While quality has improved due to intensive spraying and better cultivation practices—which helped mitigate previous fungal issues—producers face significant challenges. High temperatures, a lack of moisture, and rising cultivation costs remain primary concerns. Farmers in Paiko have warned that without upcoming rain or fog, the chestnuts could dry out on the trees.

Market prices vary significantly based on nut size. In Melivoia, the largest chestnuts are fetching between €6.30 and €6.70 per kilogram, while smaller varieties range from €2 to €3 per kilogram. The harvest serves both domestic needs and international markets, including exports to Spain, England, and the Balkan region.
