Greek government secures 40+ firms to cut staple food prices by up to 15%

More than 40 companies have agreed with the Greek government to lower the prices of basic consumer goods starting in September. The programme targets at least 500 branded items, with an average discount of 6‑7% and some reductions reaching up to 15%.

Participating suppliers must submit their price‑cut lists to the Independent Authority for Market and Consumer Protection by mid‑August. The cuts apply only to branded products; private‑label items are excluded. A complementary price‑freeze on all supermarket goods will remain in force, and the agreement runs until 31 December 2026.

The initiative was launched after a meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and follows a drop in Greece’s inflation rate to 2.7% in July. Consumers will see the reduced prices marked on supermarket shelves.
