Greek customs strike shuts Macedonia border crossings for four hours

Greek customs workers began a four‑hour strike on 27 July 2024, halting operations at the Evzoni (Bogorodica), Dojran and Niki crossings with North Macedonia. Passenger vehicles will be allowed to cross only at ten‑minute intervals, while all freight traffic will be stopped for the duration of the stoppage. The strike is part of a broader dispute over working conditions, unpaid overtime, wages and a demand for an eight‑hour workday, five‑day week and reinstatement of extra salary payments.

The temporary closure comes at the height of the tourist season, prompting the National Association of Tourist Agencies of Serbia (JUTA) to advise travellers to expect longer waiting times and to monitor official updates. The disruption is expected to create congestion on alternative routes and affect cross‑border tourism between Greece, North Macedonia and neighboring Serbia.
