Greek Deputy Sports Minister announces EOK financial audits
Greek Deputy Sports Minister Giannis Vroutsis has announced extraordinary financial audits of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) following allegations of match-fixing in Greek basketball. Describing the situation as a ‘deep wound’ and ‘toxic’ for Greek sports, Vroutsis stated that the state will use its tools, including the Ministry of Finance and the Transparency Authority, to restore credibility to the sport.
Despite the ongoing investigation into bribery and match manipulation, Vroutsis assured that the professional and amateur basketball championships will continue as scheduled. He has also suspended funding to the federation while awaiting the results of the audits and a scheduled meeting with the EOK board.
In contrast, the political party SYRIZA (ELAS) has called for Vroutsis’s resignation, criticizing the government’s delayed response to previous complaints regarding refereeing and integrity. The party highlighted that judicial investigations have already led to six arrests and three pre-trial detentions, including that of EOK President Vangelis Liolios.
