Greek Deputy Transport Minister Kotisiras Announces Skaramagas Junction Deal and Tougher E‑Scooter Rules

Deputy Transport Minister George Kotisiras said that the contract for the Skaramagas interchange, a key project aimed at relieving traffic on the Athens‑Corinth highway, will be signed on 13 July. The work is expected to cut truck travel times by 15‑20 km/h and is funded with roughly €150 million from EU resources.

He also unveiled a new regulatory package for electric scooters. Sales, rental and loan of scooters to anyone under 17 years will be banned, and violations can attract fines of up to €1,000. The rules require helmets, reflective vests for night use, mandatory insurance, and prohibit use on roads with speed limits above 50 km/h. Parking scooters illegally on ramps or traffic lights will also be fined. Kotisiras emphasized that “electric scooters have been a big problem for public safety,” and noted a recent drop in fatal road accidents following stricter traffic checks.

In addition, the ministry confirmed the arrival of 125 new electric buses for Athens and the refurbishment of Metro lines 2 and 3, with the first upgraded train expected in late July. New trains from the Greece‑Italy partnership are slated to reach 23 units by 2027.
