Greek doctor incentive draws applications for small islands

A monthly €1,500 incentive funded by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation has spurred interest among physicians for positions in primary health care units on 47 Greek islands with populations under 4,000. The first call received 57 applications for 42 vacant posts, with strong competition for islands such as Hydra, Poros and Spetses. Thirteen locations – including Agios Efstratios, Psara, and Siphnos – attracted no applicants, highlighting persistent challenges of living and working in remote islands.

The programme, part of a seven‑year €10.08 million donation, aims to strengthen public health structures in these isolated communities. Applicants must provide on‑site medical services, and the total number of doctors eligible for the allowance is capped at 80 per month.
