Greek play “Independent States” begins summer tour of open‑air venues
The theatre production “Independent States,” written by Giorgos Paloumpis and Antonis Tsotsiopoulos, has left the permanent stage of the Theatre Chora after two consecutive sold‑out seasons and launched a summer touring schedule. The inaugural performances will be held on 4‑5 July at the Municipal Theatre of Lycabettus in Athens, followed by shows in open‑air venues across Athens and Thessaloniki, including the Municipal Theatre of Ilioupoli (6‑7 July), Vea Theatre in Piraeus (9‑10 July), Theatre of the Rocks in Melina Mercouri (11 July), Katrakeio Theatre in Nikaia (13 July), Theatre Petra (20 July), and the Municipal Garden Theatre of Papagou (22‑23 July). In Thessaloniki the play will appear at the Open Air Theatre of Sykies (15‑16 July). The work dramatises the real‑life story of dissenting physician Vasilis Tsiros in Greece’s early post‑junta period, using a harshly realistic style to comment on power, media manipulation and public discourse.
The tour gives audiences who missed the previously sold‑out shows an opportunity to experience the production, which has been hailed as one of the most significant recent works of contemporary Greek drama.
