Greek E65 Highway Section and Thessaloniki Metro Expansion to Open Summer

Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas told the second “Greece 2030” conference that several flagship projects are entering their final stage. The northern 45‑km segment of the Central Greece highway (E65), linking Kalambaka with Grevena, is slated to open in July. The work, financed with €450 million from the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund, will directly connect Central Greece with Thessaly, Western Macedonia and Epirus.

At the same time, the five new stations of the Thessaloniki Metro extension toward Kalamaria are expected to begin service by the end of July after successful testing and certification. Dimas noted that the metro has already cut city‑centre traffic by about 15 % and the extension should further improve congestion.

Additional summer works include the completion of the first 10 km of the North Road Axis of Crete (Neapoli‑Agios Nikolaos). The minister also outlined other road interventions: the €70 million Skaramagas triple junction, slated for contract award by June, and upgrades at the Metamorfosi junction on Athens – Lamia road. Urban bus fleets in Athens and Thessaloniki are being renewed with anti‑pollution, fully accessible vehicles under the same fund. Finally, €1.3 billion is earmarked for restoring road damage caused by storm Daniel, with €500 million sourced from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, aiming to build more climate‑resilient infrastructure.
