Greek Eastern Attica Sewage Upgrade Program Worth €1 Billion

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, led by Minister Staurou Papastavrou, held a wide meeting on the €1 billion sewage infrastructure program for Eastern Attica. The plan includes the construction of about 1,500 km of sewage pipelines, three new wastewater treatment plants and 70 active intervention sites across 13 municipalities, serving roughly half a million residents.

Financing approved so far totals €530 million, with an additional €470 million in study phase and €255 million in tender phase. The programme aims to replace outdated septic systems, comply with EU Directive 91/271/EEC, and enable water reuse for irrigation over more than 4,000 hectares. Completion of the full network and treatment facilities is targeted for 2030, with the new treatment centre in Rafina‑Pikermi projected to cost €100 million.

Local officials, including Mayor Dimitra Tseva of Rafina‑Pikermi, highlighted the project's environmental, developmental and social impact, urging strict timeline adherence and coordination among all stakeholders.
