ELSTAT: Greek household spending exceeds income in 2025

According to preliminary data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Greek households and non-profit institutions saw their final consumer spending rise by 5.2% in 2025, reaching 171.8 billion euros. This growth outpaced the 3.7% increase in gross disposable income, which rose to 165.4 billion euros from 159.4 billion euros in 2024.

As a result, consumer spending exceeded disposable income by 6.4 billion euros. This gap has led to a decline in the household savings rate, which fell to -3.9% in 2025, compared to -2.4% in 2024. This marks the fourth consecutive year of negative savings, following figures of -4.8% in 2022, -2.5% in 2023, and -2.4% in 2024.

In the broader economy, the external balance of goods and services deficit narrowed to 11.6 billion euros in 2025, down from 13.6 billion euros in 2024. Additionally, the gross fixed capital formation as a percentage of gross value added for non-financial corporations decreased to 25.3% from 26.3% the previous year.
