Greece exits EU macroeconomic imbalance surveillance as economy improves
The European Commission announced that Greece is no longer listed among the countries with macro‑economic imbalances, citing reduced vulnerabilities in public and external debt and consistent primary surpluses. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed the decision, saying it closes a negative chapter that began during the crisis and signals a return to normal fiscal conditions.
Domestic economic indicators also show improvement. The IOBE confidence index rose to 107.5 in May, driven by stronger expectations in industry and construction and a modest rebound in consumer confidence. The OECD’s latest report projects resilient growth for Greece but warns of inflation around 4 % in 2026 and ongoing energy‑price risks. Together, these assessments highlight Greece’s progress toward fiscal stability while noting remaining structural challenges.
