Greek Education Ministry sets hiring timeline for 2026‑27 school year

The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports announced the schedule for staffing primary and secondary schools for the 2026‑27 academic year. Applications for the 5,487 permanent teaching positions opened on 5 August and must be submitted by 10 August. The names of the successful candidates will be published on 11 or 12 August, followed by oath‑taking and placement in the second half of August so that they can begin work on 1 September.

For the first phase of temporary hires, the ministry plans to recruit about 30,000 substitute teachers – roughly 80 % of the total temporary workforce needed for the year – with the aim of having them in place before schools open on 11 September. Deputy Minister Nikos Papaiwannou detailed the timetable during an interview on ERT News.
