Greek Egnaia Motorway faces tolls, tunnel delays amid safety concerns

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Takhiaros described the current disruptions on the Egnaia Motorway as a temporary "inconvenience" for travelers. Critics argue the highway, especially the Epirus section, is operating with reduced lanes, thousands of potholes and an uncertain timetable for repairs.

The road’s tunnels, many built in the 1980s, lack required certifications under EU safety directives that were tightened after the Mont Blanc accident. Officials say 69 tunnels longer than 500 m must be certified, prompting temporary traffic measures, placement of fire‑fighting vehicles and installation of flame‑traps on the pavement.

Opponents demand the government publish a full, binding schedule for works, ensure public oversight of the interventions, improve safety measures and either reduce or suspend tolls while the service quality remains degraded.
